Home Remodeling Trends - Get More For Less
If money is not an issue, feel free to max out on the latest home remodeling trends. On the other hand, if your budget is more limited (like many of us), you’ll want to pick and choose the trends you incorporate in your renovations, remodeling or interior decorating a little more wisely. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the designer looks you can create with less.
Plan Ahead - View magazines or websites to determine the room styles and style trends you desire. Create a storyboard or moodboard with your favorite choices. Include several pictures of rooms that closely match your ideal space, color samples - paint swatches, fabric swatches, a floorplan with room dimensions, individual pictures of furniture and accessories.
Reduce / Reuse / Recycle - Before buying anything new, check your existing inventory. Clear the clutter so you can see what you have. See if there are items of furniture or accessories in other parts of your home that will work with your new design. A chest of drawers that is underutilized in a spare room could be repurposed for use in your new space. With a simple change of the shade, an old lamp might be a close match for the new one you were going to purchase.
Carry Your Storyboard/Moodboard With You - Whether you’re just off to the grocery store or going on a serious shopping foray, always have your storyboard or moodboard with you. This will keep you on plan and help to avoid any guessing cames when it comes to color, style or size.
Carry A Small Tapemeasure - You’ll never be stuck wondering if an item is too small or too big if you always have your own tape measure.
Browse Before You Buy - Go on a fact finding mission. Take a trip for the purpose of browsing only. Make a list of stores and merchants, then hit them all. You’ll be able to compile a list of possible purchases, see what is new and check on availability. Based on the results of this exploratory exercise you’ll have a better idea of how to budget your expenses.
Be A Bargain Shopper - Stay on top of Floor Model clearance sales and become familiar with the times of the year specific things go on sale. eg. January White Sales are the perfect time to invest in new bedding and linens. Don’t be afraid to ask if something will be going on sale.
Just Say ‘No’ To Impulse Purchases - Unless it’s part of your overall design plan, one impulsive, snap decision could blow your whole decorating budget.
All easier said than done, but by following these simple guidelines your designs will always be right on trend and less expensive to achieve. Managing your spending and spending less on trendy items means it will be easier to let things go when the next hot home remodeling trend surfaces.
